Greater Portland & Casco Bay Area
Portland Maine Slideshow
|
GREATER PORTLAND
&
CASCO BAY
|
Listen as the waves wash
over the rocks at Cape Elizabeth; listen as the cymbals of the Portland
Symphony signal a passage from the 1812 Overture. View colorful boats in
Casco Bay and colorful designer clothes at the mall in South Portland or a
Freeport outlet. Enjoy an authentic ethnic meal in a city neighborhood or
freshly cooked seafood at the Yarmouth Clam Festival.
Cobblestone streets,
modern highways, culture and recreation all blend together in the Greater
Portland and Casco Bay region.
The Greater Portland and
Casco Bay region will appeal to all your senses. There are the sounds of the
ocean lapping against your boat, cascading over the rocks at Cape Elizabeth
or rolling in on the sands of an area beach. There are also the sounds of
music at the recently renovated Merrill Auditorium and the voices of actors
at various theatre companies. Entertainment is live at the Portland Players,
the Portland Stage Company, Maine Arts and the Ram Island Dance Company.
Listen to the laughter of
people enjoying a walk on the Eastern or Western Promenade in Portland or
shopping the outlets of Freeport. See the beautiful handiwork by local
artisans displayed in the galleries and shops in Portland's Arts District
and the Old Port Exchange, and the charming, historic homes that stand as a
reminder of the region's rich history. The historic sites include the
Wadsworth-Longfellow House, Admiral Peary's home on Eagle Island, Victoria
Mansion, the Tate House, and the Portland Observatory.
Experience the sea air,
the many kinds of boats and the islands of Casco Bay. You can take a ferry
from the waterfront to Peaks Island, only 15 minutes away, or all the way to
Nova Scotia.
Stroll through the Old
Port area with its eclectic mix of fashionable boutiques, coffee houses, art
galleries,
bookstores, pubs and restaurants. Sample fresh seafood and locally brewed
beers, or try the ethnic foods the area offers including Chinese, Thai,
Japanese, Italian, French, Indian, Irish, and Vietnamese.
Falmouth (the name by
which Portland once was known), to the north, is primarily residential, and
a drive along Route 88 runs through the fashionable Foreside area. The towns
of Yarmouth and Cumberland offer rural settings with farms and farmstands.
Outdoor activities abound
just a short distance from downtown Portland. Go cross-country skiing at
Wolfe's Neck, canoe the Scarborough Marsh, or hike up Bradbury Mountain. Or
catch a Sea Dogs game from bleacher seats on a sunny day!
Greater Portland and Casco
Bay await your visit. Here you'll find country charm, city sights, nautical
adventures, history, shopping bargains and "the way life should be."
