More on the Lakes Region
Fryeburg, Maine
Fryeburg is an historic Maine town, home to the 1792 prep school Fryeburg
Academy and host of Maine’s largest agricultural fair, the Fryeburg Fair
which dates back to 1851. But there is more to Fryeburg than fairgrounds and
an ivy covered campus. Fryeburg is a beautiful town near the New Hampshire
border, which affords stunning views of the Presidential Range and pastoral
landscapes. Fryeburg has a reputation in winter of being a snow belt, with a
variety of nearby skiing, sledding and snowmobiling. In summer, there is
mountain biking or road cycling, hiking, Saco river canoe trips and lake
activity. And you’re just a short drive to North Conway’s outlet shopping
and attractions.
In the quaint town of Fryeburg, there are gift shops and restaurants
including an Inn with an in house culinary arts (CIA) graduate making you
homemade breakfast and candlelight dinner.
Still you can’t mention Fryeburg with thinking of Maine’s largest Fair.
Every fall, during the peak fall foliage, the Fryeburg Fair comes alive, as
it has for over 150 years. The Fryeburg Fair hosts the world's largest steer
and oxen show, and is reputed throughout North America as the showplace for
harness racing, livestock and farm animals. Of course the fair food and
midway rides and games make it fun for the whole family – six days of it!
