Maine's Mid-Coast Region

 MID-COAST MAINE

Like fingers reaching into the sea for its treasures are the peninsulas of the Mid Coast. Hardy souls along these shores build the vessels that explore the ocean for the food it provides. Let your imagination paint each image for your mind's eye to see forever. Lobster traps and clam shacks, the lazy lapping of a bay tide and the wind-driven blow of the wild Atlantic over the rocks make up the Mid Coast scenery. Offshore islands and rolling countryside, the Wyeths' brushes and the sword of Chamberlain-from Stockton Springs to Brunswick, the Mid Coast's rich heritage, formidable character, and charming personality await you.

Mid Coast Maine has quaint, quiet, out-of-the-way villages, the spray of ocean surf crashing upon the rocks and the smell of the sea. The sights and sounds of Maine fishermen bringing in their daily catch, and the unique aroma of freshly cooked Maine lobsters, are a part of daily life. See clapboard homes, barns and the kaleidoscope of colors from May through October along country lanes curving in and out of rocky valleys. Visit one of the smaller villages: Harpswell Neck, Orr's Island, Cundy's Harbor, Parker's Head, Southport, Ocean Point, Chamberlain, South Bristol, Christmas Cove, Port Clyde, Spruce Point, Glen Cove or Northport. On the peninsulas extending into the Atlantic you'll find a quiet rural life where revolutionary war era homes blend with newer structures. Seaside farms share space with lodgings, restaurants and gift shops. Mid Coast Maine is for those looking for a quieter time. Travel Routes 123, 209, 129, 32, 220, 73 and many more unmarked lanes for views of an unpretentious way of life.

The Mid Coast is filled with attractive and interesting activities along coastal Route 1 such as Bowdoin College in Brunswick, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, the Musical Wonder House in Wiscasset, the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Mount Battie in Camden and the Belfast and Moosehead Railroad in Belfast. Inland, rolling fields offer enchanting views of farmlands and hilly horizons. Boothbay Harbor, a short distance from Route 1, has ocean cruising adventures, lodgings and fresh Maine seafood.

Cultural offerings are many and varied. Enjoy live theater, concerts and entertainment performances in Bath, Brunswick, Boothbay, Rockport, Camden and

Belfast. Antique buffs have so many antique shops and dealers from which to choose, they may have to stay extra days. For those looking for outdoor activities, there are hiking trails, sea kayaking, lakes for canoeing, sailing trips aboard two- and three-masted schooners, and island ferries.

A visit to Maine is not complete without a visit to our colorful Mid Coast region.
