Maine Hunting

Hunting is an old, popular sport in Maine, which is blessed with lots of prime wildlife, big game, vast countryside and woodlands. Hunters in Maine have a variety of animals to choose from, whether they are interested in the big-time thrills of nabbing Moose, Bear or Deer, or seeking smaller scale wild birds like turkey, quail or geese.

Although most areas of the state offer hunting, the more popular areas are up North. Rangeley, Moosehead, and Katahdin areas attract hunters every year at their many camping and lodging sites. Moose hunting, deer hunting, and bear hunting are very popular in these areas.

Maine is fortunate to have a very healthy population of some the area's premier game. Maine has the highest black bear population and density in the East with over 25,000 bears. Just as abundant in the state are over 200,000 whitetail deer and 29,000 Moose - the highest aside from Alaska.

If you are planning to take a trip to the Northern Maine woods, keep in mind that Maine has strict hunting laws to consider for your own safety and wildlife preservation purposes. A Registered Maine Guide would be a great plan for success. A Maine hunting license is required for the entire state with additional licenses needed for archery, muzzleloading, and bear hunting. Moose hunting is allowed by annual Moose permit only in Maine, for example. Hunting hours begin a half hour before sunrise and last until a half hour after sunset. Sunday hunting is illegal in Maine.
