Portland Maine
- Classic Maine
Portland,
Maine
Portland is a classic
ol
east coast seacoast town. It is a beautiful little city filled with
one-of-kind boutiques and shops, galleries, and incredible restaurants
serving everything from traditional New England clam chowder to nouveau
cuisine.
Of course, when visiting
Portland, one must take the journey by sea or land to the Maine's oldest
lighthouse - the Portland Headlight, commissioned by George Washington
and first lit in 1791. Portland Headlight is located in Fort Williams
Park and offers an on site museum.
The
Old Port - Portland's Historic Waterfront District
Portland's Old Port is one of the most successful revitalized warehouse
districts in the country. Seamlessly connected to the waterfront, the
Old Port is both a chic shopping, dining, and entertainment district and
a working waterfront.
Taking a walk
at
the water's edge along Commercial Street provides a window into the
working waterfront. Just steps from the water, one can stroll the
cobblestone streets and experience the quaint charm of this district.
The boutique shopping, one-of-a-kind stores, restaurants serving Maine's
famous lobster dishes or the latest nouveau cuisine, and a vibrant
nightlife are all superb.
The smell of the sea air, the sound of a foghorn, and the chatter of
seagulls add to an atmosphere that is undeniably Portland, undeniably
Maine.
Portland, Maine is the banking capital of northern
New England, home to
major international law firms, import/export companies, and modern
high-rise office buildings.
Portland stands as one of the few working waterfronts left in the United
States, acting as New England's largest tonnage seaport and second
largest fishing port. It is also the second largest oil port on the East
Coast and the largest foreign inbound transit tonnage port in the United
States!
Portland is Maine's largest city with 66,000 full time residents;
however it swells to 2 million if one includes annual visitors and
part-time residents. Visitors come by car, train, airplane, and boat.
Each year Portland Harbor handles thousands of international passengers.
At every turn, Portland is an experience for everyone.
