Mid Coast MaineRockland Maine

Rockland is home to the most windjammers in the US, and is one of the biggest shipping centers of Lobsters in the world. In fact Rockland is the Lobster Capital of the World. Rockland is also host to some of the biggest seaside festivals in Maine; the Maine Lobster Festival, the North Atlantic Blues Festival, The Maine Windjammer Parade, and the Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors Show.

But Rockland isn’t just about lobster and live music. The town of Rockland has a storied past of boat building and a beautiful historic district featuring sea captains homes that demonstrate the architecture dating back to the late 1700s from Italianate to Greek Revival and Colonial. You will see evidence of Rockland’s names sake, land of rocks, in the granite and limestone throughout the seaside town that has been quarried and shipped to major cities from Maine.

Another must see in Rockland is The Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center where an impressive collection of Maine art is highlighted including paintings by the three generations of the Wyeth family. The Center for Maine Contemporary Art is another must for art lovers. Lighthouse lovers should visit the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland to see the largest collection of lighthouse lenses and artifacts.

To get out on the water, The Maine State Ferry Terminal in Rockland offers daily year round service to the islands of North Haven and Vinalhaven, plus seasonal trips to Matinicus Island. Several schooners also depart from Rockland harbor for sightseeing sailing excursions.

Come the holiday season, Rockland transform to a Rockwellian Christmas greeting card. The Rockland Festival of Lights in late November is an especially festive event, the town decorates a lobster trap tree. There is a Holiday Boat Parade of Lights, and Santa arrives by lobster boat. In January, there is a “Pies on Parade” weekend with an Inn to Inn Pie Tour allowing you to visit Rockland’s historic country inns and sample delicious Maine made pies.

Rockland, and neighboring
Rockport, are great Maine towns for a vacation or a weekend visit, with lodging in hotels, motel, country inn and seaside resorts.
