Rockport has been named one of America’s prettiest towns by Forbes magazine. Rockport is well known for its lime stone industry (hence the name rock port), supplying most of the stone used in the US Capital. But a harbor seal named Andre made Rockport even more famous when the true story of the playful performing seal became a movie. Andre the Seal was written here by local Harry Goodrich who kept the seal in Rockport as part of his family for almost two decades. A statue of Andre the seal can be seen in Rockport Harbor.

Another dose of fame came to this Maine fishing village when Mel Gibson filmed the movie “Man without a face” in Rockport. The film depicted the beauty of the rock bound Maine coast and the town of Rockport.
